Israel Minister Says Cop Looks Like Real Sand Nigger

Readers to this weblog come from all four corners of the world. Not all of them will be au fait with the term sand nigger. Therefore I think it appropriate to give some background here:
“Sand nigger” is an ethnically pejorative term used to describes Arabs or people of Middle Eastern origin or Muslims. I originally used the term on this blog in a “surreptitious” manner to show the banality of the anti-Islam bigots.
At the time of writing those posts never did I think that the term would be used by a minister of democratic state to describe a member of his police force. This is precisely what has happened.
As Ynet News reports Israeli Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch is reported to have used “Arabush” while describing an under cover police officer:
“Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch, who meant to praise an undercover police agent in Tel Aviv, referred to him as an “Arabush” (Hebrew equivalent of “sand nigger”) Tuesday….
…The embarrassing incident took place while Aharonovitch was touring the vicinity of Tel Aviv’s old central bus station, a notoriously crime-ridden neighborhood. The minister met with undercover police agents in the area, and when one of the, apologized for being “a little dirty,” Aharonovitch responded: “Why dirty? You look like a real Arabush.” {Source: Ynet News}
Right-wing visitors to the Ynet News site have already started to question the translation of Arabush to sand nigger.
Be that as it may Israel prides itself on how closely it mimics western standards and norms. If that is the case how many western politicians do you know who could use such a term and not be at least reprimanded ? Is this is also the case in Israel ? We’ll just have to wait and see.
