Nakba: Is Israel Going To Criminalise Free Speech?
As first eluded to in a post entitled “Lock The Scum Up: Arabs Who Mourn Creation Of Israel” plans are a foot in the Middle East’s only democracy to criminalise freedom of expression.
A ministerial committee in Israel has approved a motion barring Arabs from commemorating the creation of Israel- known in Arabic as the Nakba.
First proposed by Yisrael Beiteinu, the party of Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, it appears that the call for such a ban is gaining traction amongst Israel’s political classes:
“The Ministerial Committee on Law and Constitution on Sunday approved a preliminary proposal which would make it illegal to hold events or ceremonies marking Israel’s Independence Day as a “nakba,” or catastrophe…..
…According to the bill, those found in violation could face up to three years in prison.
The ministerial approval is only a preliminary step and has no legal bearing yet. Before the proposal could become a law, it must first undergo Knesset approval and cabinet consideration.” {Source: Haaretz}
If this proposal becomes law do you think the current Israeli government has shoot itself in the foot ? Surely the pretense of a liberal western style democracy falls if 20% of the citizens cannot epress themselves without fearing a 3 year stretch in prision.
