Barack Obama’s recent visit to Turkey has re-ignited debate over the secular state’s accession to the European Union. In November 2007 I authored a post by the name of Turkey And The Hypocritical European Union through which I compared Turkey’s role as a staunch western ally in NATO with it’s attempts at joining the E.U.

Since interest in “Muslim” Turkey’s accession or lack of it to the EU has surfaced again I thought it would be useful to have a look at some European attitudes towards Turkey joining their union.

The following is a conversation held on The Sun discussion boards.The topic was started by Muelisto who asks the following question:

“Does the Europen Union need muslim country? Not sure, but it seems to me Turkish side, as part of the EU, will destroy the 2000 years-old European philosophy. Democracy stays democracy, but tradition and culture is more important, I think. I don’t have any direspect to Turkey.“

Here are some of the responses to the Muelisto’s question:

  • NO definately not. the EU is for Europeans, Turkey belongs to the Middle east. With the best will in the world the Turks would never fit into the EU,
    We have seen the disasters across Africa when you mix tribes across the wrong borders.
    I am not being racist just practical. Its about time those bloody EU commissioners listened to the indiginous peoples for once, instead of empire building.
    IMHO Turkey should form an EU like trading allience across the Middle east, it could well prove to be the most powerful leader in that region. (RosieInLondon)

  • I don’t agree with Turkey joining the EU, as it is a predominantly Muslim country, and it’s for this reason why they should stay out of Europe, which is predominantly Christian. Their values and way of life are so incompatible to our way of life, so it will never work, I’m afraid. (Thomas1)
  • …they are 3rd world country knocking out kids like no tomorrow with no structure to support them and they will drag down the eu with them because they have a large population – I would love a german to come on here and give an opinion as they know cos there are a few mill there (bubblesfc)

  • No thank you very much. I don’t want them bringing their outdated, neanderthal views on women across the pond any more than is already being done. The fact that their ‘judges’ and ‘prison wardens’ are proud of the men that commit honour killings says it all really. As I have opined before it seems that Europeans enjoys using Turkey as a part of NATO but have no room for it in their union. As George Orwell says in the Animal Farm: All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.
