Israeli-Arab Taisir Karaki, a Jerusalem taxi driver was murdered in mid 2007. During the Israeli police investigation Julien Soufir admitted to his murder.

Soufir a dual French-Israeli national invited Taisir Karaki back to his Tel Aviv apartment and in a brutal attack slit Taisir’s throat.

At the time of the Israeli police investigation the murder was classified as a hate crime by the the State Prosecutors Office. Now the Israeli state has changed its mind and has agreed with the Karaki family that the murder was an act of terror.

In a further development that will upset some because of Julien Soufir being classified as a paranoid schizophrenic he may be released in months if found unsuitable to stand trial :

“Taisir Karaki, a Jerusalem cab driver who was murdered in mid 2007, will be recognized by the State as a terror victim….

….Karaki’s murderer, Julien Soufir, confessed to the act and claimed his actions were nationalistically motivated. Three psychiatric evaluations deemed Soufir unfit to stand trail, diagnosing him as suffering from paranoid schizophrenia….

…The State Prosecutor’s Office classified the case as a hate crime based solely on Soufir’s confession, and subsequently presented the Defense Ministry with the family’s request to have Karaki recognized as a terror victim.

Should the court decide to find Soufir not guilty by reasons of mental illness, he may be set free within months.” (Source: Ynet News)

How can a paranoid schizophrenic who has already killed once be considered for release at such a stage ?
