Islam And The West

From all that Islamic civilization has brought to the human experience for the last 1397 years without doubt the most universally hated in the west is the copora that has come to be known as the Sharia or “Islamic Law”. From its misogynistic view of the relationship between the sexes, to the cutting of hands for thieves, to the capital punishment for homosexuality, adultery and apostasy nothing quite brings to the fore in the mind of a westerner feelings of revulsion, hate and down right literal nausea more than the Sharia.

At this stage I wish to make it perfectly clear for the reader that the purpose of this post is not in anyway to defend the punishments that are prescribed in the canon of Islamic law. Having said that I found the following situation about Iran, Islamic law, the death penalty and a British newspaper rather interesting.

The British Daily Mail reported on the 3rd of August 2007 about the case of an Iranian Majid Kavoosifar, 28 and his cousin who were hanged for the murder of a judge, police officer and bystander in a spate of robberies and attacks:

“Unrepentant, the smirking Majid Kavoosifar, 28, was led to the gallows and even manged a small wave to the crowd before his death.

However his cousin Hossein Kavoosifar, 24, was in tears as he and his uncle were executed in front of the main offices of the judiciary in central Tehran…..

…Flanked by masked hangmen, hoods over the heads of the condemned men were removed before the hanging, which took place in front of a giant portrait of the judge they had killed….

…Iranian authorities sentenced the two men to death for the murder of a prominent judge, a police officer and a bystander in a string of robberies and attacks.

The judge supervised several courts and specialized in vice cases.

Kavoosifar confessed after a three hour interrogation to murdering the judge as part of a personal vendetta, according to judicial officials quoted by state media.

He and his cousin also admitted killing the police officer and another man, as well as wounding three others, during five separate armed robberies.

Kavoosifar fled to the United Arab Emirates after killing the judge, but was later detained there and returned to Iran by Interpol in May 2006.” (Daily Mail)

For all the hatred that the Sharia generates in the west I was surprised to see such vocal public support from some of the readers of the Daily Mail in favor of the Sharia and its punishment:

“I’m all for the death penalty. Whittering on about the practise not being civilized, when crimes of rape and murder most definitely are “medieval and barbaric”, justify forteiture of life. Perhaps if Britain had retained the death penalty there would be a lot less “medieval and barbaric” attrocities in its society today.- Duke, Ontario, Canada

“A few public hangings in this country might help deter the criminals that we are forced by the PC and ‘Yuman Rights ‘ brigade’ to keep in more luxury than most of our hard up pensioners.” -Olderbird, Northants

“All those that think the sentence is barbaric should remember so is rape, if rapists and murderers were hanged in this country the crime rate might come down.”- Michael, Paignton England

“We should bring it back in the UK and stop pussy footing around.” – John, Glan Conwy

“Job done! this is one aspect of Iranian law that we should start using now. Instead we give our Rapists and Murderers a free Colour TV.”- Den, Sitttingbourne

“Medieval and barbaric it may be, but I bet Iran doesn’t have anywhere like the problems that Britain has with crime !”- Mike, Alicante, Spain

“I suppose I am one of the hang’em flog’em brigade but I sort of think that this is what we need in this country as far as murderers and other violent criminals are concerned. Jailing them is expensive and is like a holiday camp compared to Victorian jails and some in other parts of the world.”- Kenneth, London

“Good on Iran! They will not be re-offending again and think about the amount of money the state save’s not keeping them locked up.

Time we in the UK follow by example and hang too.”- Tom, UK

Bring back capital punishment, the birch etc, look at many of the youth today and many of their parents in this country. Mollycoddling has not helped us at all. make all first sentences hard and fit the crime. Prison is supposed to be punishment, and the lack of freedom is not punishment enough. -Petra Court, Cardiff

“The concept of punishing criminals is alien to PC liberals as we well know. Punishment is exactly that, punishment for crimes committed. If it acts as a deterrent too, then all well and good. Indeed in the cause of fighting crime and criminals the world produces the strangest of bed fellows. I am sure many of these contributors to the Daily Mail website would never consider themselves to be supporters of Islamic Law.
