Islam And The West

Boris Yeltsin died today in Russia from heart failure. The former Communist and Russian President had been battling ill health for some time.

In the west Yeltsin will be remembered as an ally and for his brave moves in turning Russia from its Communist past to a future based upon free market economics and democracy. Within Russia Yeltsin’s reforms were credited with selling off state assets, creating a billionaire Russian oligarchy and throwing the common Russian citizen even further into poverty than they had already been in under Communism.

February 2006 saw Yeltsin celebrate his 75th birthday and in a television interview for Russia’s Channel One he lashed out at American foreign policy:

“Former Russian president Boris Yeltsin celebrated his 75th birthday Wednesday and took a shot at U.S. foreign policy, saying Washington is monopolizing world affairs and using force to have its way.

He lashed out at the United States for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and threats against Iran, saying it is pursuing its goals “with a sword in the hand” and suggesting it is bungling the war on terrorism.

“Islam will not forgive the Americans for a long time — the fact that they destroyed a country like Iraq and war continues there,” Yeltsin told Russia’s Channel One television.

“I do not like the fact that the monopolistic policy by the Americans continues,”….

…Yeltsin said all countries should have a say in resolving world problems.

“To put it all in the hands of the Americans, who would dictate conditions — first war in Afghanistan, then war in Iraq and now they are looking at Iran — this is inadmissible,” he said. “ (Source: Ottawa Citizen)

At a time when western civilisation is fighting for its very existence comments like those of Boris Yeltsin can only be viewed as giving succour to the enemy or is there another interpretation to his comments ?
