A “Muslim Terrorist” And Cricket Balls

It appears that the only thing that some need to justify a conviction on the grounds of terrorism in this day and age is a Muslim sounding name and beard.
Dean Jones former Australian cricketer, coach and television commentator is in trouble. While commentating on a series of matches between South Africa and hosts Sri Lanka Dean Jones was heard on a live broadcast saying the word terrorist.
The “terrorist” in question is pictured above he is South African cricketer Hashim Amla. When the Amla took a catch Dean Jones’s comment that “the terrorist has got another wicket” was broadcast live throughout South Africa. In his defense Dean Jones claims that the comment was never supposed to have been transmitted on live air and that he thought that he was speaking in a commercial break.
For Mr. Jones to make such a comment one naturally assumes that this latter day Sherlock Holmes has done a great deal of forensic investigations and intelligence gathering in order to be able to “convict” Hashim Amla of the crime of terrorism. If you thought that then you would be completely and sadly mistaken. As far as I can see the only crimes that Hashim Amla has committed to warrant such a “conviction” are two fold:
(1) He is Muslim. How does “Detective” Dean Jones know this? Obviously his name is a dead give away.
(2) He has a beard.
With this second piece of evidence the case for the prosecution is sealed. There is no doubt that Hashim Amla must be a terrorist as he is a Muslim and he has a beard.
Guilt by association is a wonderful rule and can be used not only by Dean Jones to label Hashim Amla a terrorist it can also be used by me in the following manner:
Dean Jones is a white Australian by my reckoning. If I were to use our wonderful rule of guilt by association it means that Dean Jones is white, murdering and racist who is responsible for the genocide of Australia’s original inhabitants the Aborigines. What is good for the goose is good for the gander
As a result of his ” informed comment” Dean Jones has been sacked from his job as a free-lance television commentator:
“We’ve terminated Dean Jones’ freelance contract with immediate effect,” said Ray Reed, communications director for Taj TV, whose channel Ten Sports is beamed into 50 million households around the world.
“We’ve got a diverse cross-section of nationalities and religions working for us, so as a company we have a zero-tolerance policy regarding such comments. We’ve condemned the statement in the strongest possible terms.
“It’s an unfortunate situation. He made the comment when he felt it wasn’t going out on air. It was during an ad break (in Sri Lanka) but it was carried on the South African channel. Even off-air those comments aren’t acceptable within our company.”
Should he have been sacked ? I do not know. I am all for freedom of expression and as such Dean Jones was just articulating what he felt. Should he have lost his job for expressing the truth as he saw it? I leave that your better judgment.

hey, nice blog you got here.
I noticed someone out there has a little green footballs watch blog. Somebody actually has time to monitor those fools? Personally, I don’t have the patience.

Thanks for the comment. If only they knew that they were fools the problem is that they think they are right.

Does the beard have any significance at all in Islamic beliefs? Just curious. Looks like you’ve been tinkering with the template. I like this much better, as it’s easier to read. You might even be able to use one of the BLOG VILLAGE banners with this look.

Dirty Butter how do you mean “significance”?
Islam has beliefs and laws. Beliefs are to be believed and laws are to be followed. The best way that I can explain it would be like Judaism. Jews have to keep kosher and the Sabbath. Muslims also have a law to keep.
The question now arises is do Muslim men have to keep beards? The answer depends on who you quesiton. There are some Muslim scholars who say no and there are some who say most definitley yes and as far as I know they are in the majority and are considered orthodox

So do all Muslim men wear beards? I know there are orthodox and reformed Jews who have very different views of rules. Are there orthodox and reformed Muslims, too????
Could you give me a link to an English translation that I can download of the parts of the Koran that speak of Jesus? I’d like to read them for myself.

Dirty Butter I would not say that in Islam we have a system akin to the Jewish orthodox/ reform/conservative. We have scholars who interperate the scriptures of Islam to enable Muslims to live obedient lives to God taking into consideration the situation their and the world that is around them.
Jesus the son Mary is mentioned numerous times in the Qur’an. I will not be able to give you a comprehensive list of all the places. However I do have a link here for one of the chapters from the Qur’an. The chapter is entitled Maryam or Mary as in English. The chapter begins relating the story of Zakharias and John the Baptist and moves onto to Mary and Jesus. The link is in video format. The actual recitation of the Qur’an is in Arabic but there is an English translation for you to be able to understand it:

Thank you for the video. That is helpful, but it still leaves me confused on a point that’s off topic. I mentioned to a friend of mine, who does work with some Muslims in the medical field, that I had been blogging with you. When I said something about the respect that you show for Jesus, but the disdain at the Christian view of the Trinity, she said there was a Muslim at work who considered Jesus to be a sorcerer and was very disrespectful towards any mention of Him. That surprised me, as you seem to be very respectful of Jesus, although your beliefs about Him are different from mine.
Back on topic … So even though all Muslims memorize the same words of the Koran, not all Muslims interpret those words to mean the same thing, right? Sounds very much like the situation with Christianity and the Bible. With us, that’s why there are so many denominations, as different Christians view various passages differently, or give emphasis to some parts of the Bible moreso than others.

Dirty Butter as for your first point about that “Muslim” and his view about Jesus let me clear up the confusion.
Islam as many will tell you is based upon 5 pillars however it also has 6 articles of faith that one must belive inorder to call oneself a Muslim. I shall for your benefit detail all 11 points here for you:
Pillars of Islam;
(i) The testimony. This is the act by which one enters Islam that is to testify that nothing is worthy of worship except God and that Muhammed is the Messenger of God. By this witness a person becomes a Muslim. It can be compared to the ceremony of baptism that a Christian must do to enter his faith.
(ii) The prayer. That is to pray fives times a day. The times of these prayers are slightly before dawn, just after high noon, mid-afternoon, just after sunset and finally the night prayer.
(iii) Zakat-Charity. This means that all Muslims if they reach the financial threshold must pay 2.5% of their annual earnings to the poor and wayfarer.
(iv) To fast during the month of Ramadan. The muslim calender is lunar and different to the solar calender used in the west. Fasting consists of the following: abstaining from food, drink, sexual intercourse and bad and insulting speech.
(v) The final pillar is the Hajj or the pilgrmage to Mecca. This a Muslim should do at least once in his life if he is financial able to.
Now moving on to the articles of faith which all Muslims must believe in and they are 6
(i)The first is to believe in the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe. Muslims use the arabic term for this being who we call Allah. There are many reasons as to why we prefer this term to the english term God.
(ii) To believe in angels.
(iii) To believe that the Creator sent down revelations to people before the Quran. We believe in the ones that are mentioned in the Qur’an and others that have not. We believe that these revelations came orignally from God but were changed by man afterwards.
(iv) To believe that the Creator sent men as Messengers and Prophets to teach mankind. One such great man was Jesus the son of Mary who was sent by God as a sign. We love and respect these Messengers and Prophets.
(v)To believe in Judgement Day. A time when all of mankind will return to the One who created them to be judged as to what they did in their earthly life.
(vi) To believe in pre-destination. Which explained by the following :
That God has absolute knowledge of all affairs. Whether it be past, present, or future.
2) That God has written all matters that would ever occur in a preserved tablet.
3) That nothing occurs except by the will of God.
4) That God the Magnificent, created everything.
Dirty Butter as you can see it is an article of the Islamic faith to believe and love Jesus the son of Mary. A Muslim can never utter a word of disrespect to Jesus never mind calling him a magician. We affirm the miracles that are attributed to him. As Muslims we love Jesus as much as we love Muhammad they were both sent by God to teach men the same message of monotheism.

After hearing the racist remarks made by former Australian cricketer and now turn commentator Dean Jones, I was left in a state of shock. Jones, A player who played 52 test and 164 ODI international’s for Australia, And who’s being commentating for the last 5 years, made a deeply offensive and derogatory reference to South African cricketer, Hashim Amla.
Jones, While on air said, “the terrorist has got another wicket” when Amla took the catch that dismissed Sri-Lankan batsmen, Kumar Sangakkara. Jones further goes on to say that, “Everyone needs to get away from perpetuating the myth, publicly and privately, that beards associated with the Muslim faith are somehow suspicious. Amla who is a devout Muslim wears a beard for religious reasons. So i dont know were Jones gets the myth that a Muslim with a beard is suspicious. To clear the suspicion with regards to the beard, A Muslim who has a beard, Is following and act of Prophet Muhammed (peace be up on him).
Jones further goes on to say that he is friends with the Pakistan cricket team and is truely sorry to have caused offence to the Muslims, But later goes on to say, What he said, Was never supposed to be heard over the air. Is he really sorry for what he has said after making a comment like that?
And it was also nice to hear Cricket South Africa’s CEO, Gerald Majola showing support to Hashim by demanded that Jones be fired immediately from his commentating job which has happened. Majola said racial stereotyping has no place in cricket and must be stamped on swiftly and we will be discussing the matter with the ICC.
